2009 Wheeler County Cultural and Heritage Grants Announce

November 2009 - $4300 worth of grants have been awarded  to organizations and individuals for projects related to the arts, heritage and humanities. Funding for these projects was provided to the Coalition by the Oregon Cultural Trust.

Grants were awarded on a competitive basis as follows:

$300 to Janet Wilson asked for assistance reproducing her mother’s art work.  (Jane Stirewalt  was well known for her beautiful paintings of Wheeler County before her passing away).

$500 to the Fossil School District’s school foundation  for their  music program.  Fossil, along with other rural schools in the area, has a music program provided by Ethos, Inc. of Portland and Americorps.  Each rural school district contributes financially toward the program and Fossil asked for some assistance in meeting that financial obligation from the Cultural Coalition.

$500  for the Fossil Museum to purchase two humidifiers. Because heat is turned off during the winter, excess moisture is a problem in the museum and is not good for old documents and photographs.

$500  to Lisa Robertson of Eastern Oregon University.  She would like to bring a violin/harp recital to Fossil for both the public and school students.  Other recitals that Lisa had  previously  arranged  were very well received.  Not only did the visiting musicians  share beautiful music, but they had worked on a piece to perform with the students.  The Board encourages that students from Spray and Mitchell be invited as well.

$500 to Dan Robinson, president of the Fossil City Library board,  for the purchase of books on the geology of the area as well as local history books.  The Library Board will supply a list of books the money purchased.

The Board is pleased to announce that all 2009 requests were reviewed and awarded.  And because we had the funds to do it, $500  each was awarded to the Painted Hills Festival, Spray Rodeo Association, Fossil Players, and Writer-in-Residence program because of their continued fine work.  Though these organizations did not submit a formal request, the Board recognized their need and wanted to encourage each of these organizations for their continued efforts.  We appreciate that these fine organizations may have held their requests so that others could have a chance for a first time grant.

Congratulations to all the 2009 Mini-Grant awardees!!
